Natural Bridge Health Symposium A Success

The Natural Bridge Health Symposium 2010 was held at Natural Bridge State Resort Park in Slade, Kentucky, on July 9 through 11. The symposium was sponsored by Air Methods Kentucky, Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital, and Estill County EMS. Feedback from those participating shows that it was a resounding success.

Returning in 2010 after a short hiatus due to the acquisition and reorganization, the symposium kicked off Friday evening with a hands-on advanced airway workshop that included our regional METI Human Patient Simulator Mobile Lab. On Saturday morning Dr. Andrew Bernard opened with “Fluid Resuscitation in the Field,“ followed by “Rural Management of Pelvic and Extremity Trauma” by Dr. Erik Hasenboehler and “ Actue Stroke” by Dr. Michael Dobbs. Following a cook-out lunch, participants broke out into either an ALS or BLS track, and Saturday was wrapped up with “Current Treatments of Heart Failure” with Dr. Michael Rukavina.

Sunday began with “Children in Disasters” by Dr. Nathan Timm. Kentucky Reptile Zoo Director Jim Harrison and Curator Kristen Wiley brought some of their special friends for “Snakes, Snakes and More Snakes.” Dr. Berry Campbell discussed “Rural Transport of OB Patients” and Dr. Joseph Iocono presented “Peds Trauma.” ALS and BLS tracts followed lunch and the symposium ended with “Pearls in Peds” by Dr. Iocono and “It Can’t Happen to Me” by Marty Johnson.

Participants surveyed during the symposium all agreed that the content was engaging and pertinent. Ten exhibitors helped subsidize the 45 registered students who were able to attend all three days for a remarkably low $50 registration fee that included two continental breakfasts and two lunches. The conference ended in early evening so that participants and their families had time to enjoy the scenic wonders of Natural Bridge State Resort Park and its many amenities.
