The KY-2 base flies the company’s only
EC135, a twin-engine helicopter originally from STATCARE and painted with the Unbridled Spirit color scheme. In addition to being an excellent model for new employee orientation, the aircraft’s size and capabilities lets KY-2 to be one of the few bases to offer a ride-along program. Under the right circumstances it will also allow a parent to fly with a pediatric patient and can be adjusted to transport 2 patients. The patient cot is more of a gurney with wheels so patients do not have to be lifted off the cot to be loaded and unloaded from the aircraft. Cruising speed is around 130 knots.
The KY-2 base is located in the same building as the Montgomery County Fire Department and EMS, allowing staff to interact with the members of the fire department and EMS during special occasions and downtime. The EMS Major for Montgomery County, Robin Barber, is a former KY-2 flight crew member.
Our customers are the EMS agencies and hospitals in Montgomery, Clark, Bath, Estill, Powell, Menifee, Bourbon, Nicholas, Harrison, Mason, Fleming, Wolfe, Madison, Bracken, and Robertson counties. Our primary receiving hospitals are UKMC, St. Joseph Lexington, and Central Baptist.
All of the full-time medics at KY2 have a history of EMS work as well as firefighter backgrounds, with several still working for Lexington Fire Department, one as a major. The KY-2 flight nurses have extensive ER experience, with several having worked in the University of Kentucky ER. KY-2 nurses often assist covering openings at other AMKY bases.
All of the pilots at KY-2 are not only military trained but have also all served time in combat as pilots for the military. Their military careers range from the Vietnam Conflict to the current war in Iraq. They all live locally in either Morehead or the Lexington area. Our mechanic Earl Crase lives in Clay City and was a former Marine.
