KY 5 was the fifth aircraft in the original sequence of the St. Joe CareFlight Air Medical Teams. Initially based in Versailles, Ky., and hosted by Bluegrass Community Hospital, the aircraft was moved further west to its present location in Frankfort with host hospital Frankfort Regional Medical Center. There continues to be a strong alliance with the ER/ICU and flight crews, with general service area including the counties of Franklin, Scott, Grant, Owen, Carroll, Shelby, Henry, Mercer, Boyle, Anderson, Jessamine, Woodford, and Fayette.
The base flies an A-Star N547AM with recent average lift-off times of just under 7 minutes. Our aircraft are supplied with the Welch Allyn PIC 50 monitoring system, the LTV 1200 ventilator and Alaris mini-med pump. Flight crews are comprised of critical care trained flight nurses, experienced flight paramedics, pilots and a certified airframe mechanic.
The KY-5 staff has built a strong relationship with surrounding hospitals and EMS services despite a close proximity to two level one trauma centers, The University of Kentucky and The University of Louisville. In addition to patient transports, the KY-5 staff serves the local areas with outreach education for medical provider, including classes for critical care transport, non-violent crisis intervention, and re-certification. Community support activities have included involvement with mock drills for the surrounding counties, high school mock disasters, and health fairs.
