The KY-6 Elizabethtown base opened for operations on November 5, 2004. The base got off to a rough start, with an ice storm on December 23 collapsing the hangar and wiping out the office. Crewmembers lived in a hotel for several months but returned to the airport, quickly recovering and growing to one of the largest bases in the entire eastern United States.
We fly a BK117 with two-patient capabilities. Our service area (within 40 miles of our base) includes the counties of Breckenridge, Bullitt, Grayson, Hardin, Hart, Larue, Meade, and Nelson. The hospitals we serve are Breckinridge Memorial, Twin Lakes, Hardin Memorial, Caverna, Flaget, and Ireland Army. Some of these areas are shared with other Air Methods bases within their overlapping 40-mile coverage areas. The University of Louisville, a Level One Trauma Center, is 18 minutes flight time from our base.
KY-6 averages around 40 percent scene flights, with an average lift off time of 6.9 minutes. Crew member experience includes the following averages: Flight Nurses: 22 years; Flight Paramedics: 18 years; and Pilots: 26 years.
